EMDR & IFS Consultation for Therapists

Learn to work with protective parts and confidently integrate IFS therapy into EMDR

You’re trying to be aware of protective parts during EMDR…

But you might be feeling stuck about what to say and when…

Whether you’ve recently heard about IFS/parts work, or you already have some IFS training— you might be feeling a little stuck with how to smoothly integrate it with EMDR…especially when working with complex trauma.

You might have tried using IFS interweaves or working with protective parts directly, but it can feel confusing and a bit disjointed. You want to HOW and WHEN to bring in parts work without making it weird.

And if you’re anything like myself, you’re also looking for more structure & direction so your work feels effective with your clients.

Integrating EMDR & IFS can make complex work easier

Can you relate to any of this?

You’re trying to work with protective parts but…

  • You feel stuck when your clients keep looping during phase 4

  • You don’t know WHAT to say when you notice protectors

  • You’re worried about sounding weird or confusing your clients

  • It feels awkward introducing the concept of parts (like what if they responded with “what are you even talking about?!?”)

  • You sense your clients are shutting-down, in their head, or not quite connected to their emotions during EMDR

  • You’re not sure WHEN to work with protective parts vs. follow standard EMDR protocol

Why do clients get stuck during EMDR?

This is one of the most common questions I hear therapists ask during EMDR consultation. They don’t know WHAT to do when standard protocol isn’t working, especially with complex cases.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve messed something up, or that EMDR is not going to work. It often means your client’s nervous system and protective parts need more support before processing can continue.

Clients can become stuck during emdr because they:

  • intellectualize their feelings instead of connecting to them emotionally

  • feel overwhelmed during processing & go out of their window of tolerance

  • experience dissociation or emotional numbing/distancing

  • are polarized between two different protective parts that won’t ease up

  • become highly self-critical or shaming

  • feel afraid of change, letting go, or releasing important beliefs that kept them safe in the past

These responses are all signs you’re likely working with someone’s protective system & their parts are showing up to do their job. They’re using strategies that were once VERY important in the past, and helped protect them from overwhelming & painful experiences.

Learning how to respond to these moments with curiosity rather than frustration can completely change EMDR processing.

Standard EMDR therapy is great, but it doesn’t teach you HOW to work with parts

If you’re feeling stuck with standard protocol, you’re definitely not alone. I frequently felt this way before I was trained in IFS therapy.

Consultation for blending EMDR & IFS therapy can help you:

Know when to slow down and get more clarity vs. continue processing

Map out protective parts in phase 2 & learn the positive intention behind their strategies

Learn how to address protector fears & get permission before moving into phase 4

Use IFS interweaves more effectively during reprocessing phases

Assess for protector backlash and create more flexible treatment plans (like targeting protector fears with EMDR, instead of specific memories)

If you’re looking for:

More than generic interweaves during processing phases

A consultant who really knows IFS (not just IFS-informed)

Techniques to identify & work with protective parts, so you have smoother processing

Guidance on when to use EMDR vs. IFS/parts work

2 Ways We Can Work Together

If we haven’t met yet, I’m haley

I’m a highly sensitive human & a trauma therapist

I’m a Certified EMDR therapist & EMDRIA approved Consultant

A Certified IFS therapist- level 2 trained

I personally know what’s it like to feel stuck working with protective parts and struggling to pick targets with complex cases. Even though I’m an EMDR therapist & consultant, I consider IFS therapy my main modality. It’s the lens that I view all my clients and how I conceptualize trauma work.

Through my therapy journey, I’ve learned how much smoother EMDR goes when you work WITH protective parts instead of seeing them as “blocks.” Understanding protective parts (and working with my own parts), has made me a better EMDR therapist!

Curious about my training & experience?

Sill wondering if i’m the right fit for you?

As a neurodivergent therapist, I’ve learned how much structure, visual examples & analogies help my learning process. I feel passionate about offering consultation that is organized & reduces the extra mental load that can come with integrating EMDR & IFS in complex cases.
